7 Ways to Improve Your Outdoor Living Spaces for the DIY Homeowner

Spending time outside is one of the best parts of summer, but you are not going to enjoy yourself if you haven’t taken the time to improve your outdoor living space. A couple of chairs thrown out on the lawn is a great start, but there is so much more that you can do on your own in this area to make you want to use it every single second of the day and night.

Here are 7 ways to improve your outdoor living spaces for the DIY homeowner:

  1. Refresh Your Deck: If you have already managed to construct a deck in your backyard, it is time to refresh it a little to make it look like new again. You can simply give your deck a good scrubbing, while also making small repairs along the way. Of course, your deck may be beyond repair, or nonexistent if you haven’t built one yet, and in those cases, you’ll want to grab a hammer and get started.
  2. Convert Your Grill to Gas: You may be thinking that you already have a gas grill, so what in the world are we talking about?!? You may have a gas grill, but you probably use a propane tank for the fuel. How many times have you been in the middle of cooking a big juicy steak or some hot dogs and burgers and run out of propane?? We bet that it’s happened more than you would like to admit! Well, if you take the time to convert to gas, you will never need to worry about running out ever again. Instead, you can cook as much as you want, whenever you want, and still have gas coming through the lines.
  3. Build Your Own Fire Pit: There are plenty of fire pits out on the market, but it is super easy to build one on your own. All you need to do is purchase stone blocks and use them to create a circle. Alternate the stones in each row, so that they overlap the cracks from the row before. The stones will not need to be mortared together and will stay in place until you decide that you want to move it somewhere else.
  4. Add a Raised Garden Bed: A raised garden bed will add some visual appeal to your yard, but did you know that it will also act like additional seating too? It’s true! The material that you use doesn’t really matter, although stone blocks will hold up better in the elements, while also staying in place.
  5. Add a Water Feature: There is nothing more relaxing that listening to the sound of trickling water while sitting in your backyard. At least, as long as you know where the trickling water sound is coming from! Anyway, a fountain, small pond, or little stream are great water features that you can incorporate into your backyard. Add some flowers or plants around it and you will have quite the Zen-like area.
  6. Construct a Screened in Patio: There aren’t too many people that can handle all the bugs that come out at night or after it rains, which is why a screened in patio is a great option for you to consider. You can still enjoy the outdoors, but you will be covered from all the elements as well as the bugs that decide to visit.
  7. Build a Planter that Waters Itself: There is nothing worse than spending hours creating flowerbeds and vegetable gardens only to have them perish when you forget to water them! Thankfully, there is a solution to this very common problem. A self-watering planter will take care of watering your flowers, plants, and vegetables all on its own, so you never need to take the time to do it yourself. It is easy to construct, and you will be able to use it for many years in the future.

There are plenty of things that you can do in your backyard to make it a phenomenal space to enjoy during the warmer months of the year. Many of them are quite easy to tackle on your own, but if you need help, it is only a phone call away.
